     As part of the "new deal" federal funds were spent to create a canal to send Delta fresh water to Southern California or other areas outside the Delta region.  Certain levees had to be improved to allow for the water diversions, and to protect the prime farmland of those islands.  Those levees are still called "project levees".  Later, more improvements were made when the Sacramento Deep Ship Channel was constructed, and when California built a second canal to divert more Delta water to other areas of the state.  Many more maps and details found at http://DeltaREvision.com  This page is more focused on maps showing Steamboat Slough during this timeperiod.
